Hartmann Books

Stuttgart, Germany · since 2016

Hartmann Books was founded in 2016 in Stuttgart by Angelika and Markus Hartmann. Markus ran the photography and contemporary art programme at Hatje Cantz from 1990 to 2013, and the house is deliberately small: ten to twelve titles a year for a niche audience, planned over the long term, with the stated belief that the future of the art book is not in the masses and the mainstream. Each book gets its own form and layout, and the subjects range from architecture and the city to contemporary history and politics, literature and theatre. The press has won the German Publishers Award twice, and it treats press work and building distribution networks after printing as a large share of the job.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
