For his latest project, Henrik Spohler travelled the Netherlands in 2020/21 on five extended journeys totalling 7,500 km. He looks as an outsider at this country in the heart of Western Europe. Flatlands is a photographic landscape contemplation of the country in which the genre of landscape painting was decisively developed in the 17th century. Today it is the most densely populated country in Europe, criss-crossed by a complex network of roads, canals and railways. Seemingly endless industrial zones line the transport routes.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
