What can, what may a body be? The bodies in Anne Morgenstern's pictures undermine all categorisations. Sometimes they are sensual, sometimes brutal. Sometimes alive, sometimes they become object. They are self-determined and externally-determined bodies, always disconcerting. Like the photographer's gaze, as merciless as it is tender, they take on different qualities and roles. In the pictorial interplay of form, colour and materiality, Morgenstern combines images of human bodies with those of objects, putting them in relation to one another and giving them new meaning. Bodies as we think we know them are deconstructed.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
