How much natural-disaster protection has become part of the European landscape is shown by the work State of Nature. For it, Claudius Schulze travelled around 50,000 km through Europe, photographing seemingly picturesque landscapes with his large-format camera from a crane truck. But each of these idylls has a flaw: Alpine panoramas are cut through by avalanche barriers, the North Sea coast furrowed by breakwaters. In each photo, protective structures jut into the landscape. Yet these images are not about showing the border between culture and the wild; on the contrary, they make clear how much the two spheres interpenetrate.
