Friend Editions

New York, United States · since 2022

Friend Editions is a collaborative publishing platform founded by Oliver Shaw in 2022 and based between New York and Los Angeles. It began with a one-colour Xerox zine printed for the Sunday's Zine Swap in Los Angeles, and every title since has carried a number in a running catalogue, from FE01 onwards. The house works in small editions, most of them between fifty and a few hundred copies, with emerging and established artists, and gives each book a form of its own: stapled zines on uncoated stock, casebound books with a tipped-in image, an oversized lay-flat volume like Ewen Spencer's One Night in Watford, or Jerry Hsu's Lonley City, 366 pages shot entirely on iPhone. Richard Kern's Grey Cards comes with a grey card tipped into its cover. Friend Editions also co-publishes with other imprints and brands, and makes clothing, hats and tote bags with its monogram alongside the books.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
