Gost
GOST is an independent visual arts and photography publisher in London, founded in 2012 and directed by Stuart Smith, with a double aim: to give emerging artists a platform and to contribute to the print legacies of established masters. It calls its books uncategorisable, and the examples on its own site show why: a chronicle of seven men who claim to be the Messiah, a study of Turkish soap operas, archive photographs from the Mexico City police, portraits of winners of state-run competitions in Belarus. The thread is the story rather than the format. GOST also runs awards for first books, among them one with the ICP and the Unseen GOST Books Publishing Award, and its shop sorts the books as current, signed and special editions.
