Silvana Editoriale

Cinisello Balsamo, Italy · since 1948

Silvana Editoriale was founded in 1948 by Amilcare Pizzi in memory of his daughter Silvana, who died in 1944, and it began with art history: the Silvana Files for the 1949 UNESCO congress in Beirut, the UNESCO Collection of World Art, exhibition catalogues for Picasso and Bonnard. In the mid-1990s it redefined its strategy and grew in art, design, architecture and photography, working with foundations, institutes, universities and museums in Europe, the US and the Middle East. Photography reached the list through partnerships such as the European Photography Festival of Reggio Emilia and the Biennale of Contemporary Arab Photography in Paris, and through the archives kept at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Cinisello Balsamo, where the house is based.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
