Eighty frames, selected from the holdings of the Galleria Civica of Modena, portray great artists in the most varied attitudes, caught while they work, rest or pose in front of the lens.

Among the portraits, made by leading Italian and foreign practitioners, are Max Ernst seated in his New York studio with his face wrapped in cigarette smoke, and Pablo Picasso stretched out at ease.
