Postcart

Rome, Italy · since 1994

Postcart has been an independent photobook publisher in Rome since 1994, and its stated method is slow: to build a catalogue on contemporary themes over time, together with the artists, printing on papers chosen to show off the photographs. The series give it a structure rarely found in a photobook house: Incontri, Horizons, Spaces, Time in Jazz, co-editions with Aperture and with the Italian central institute for cataloguing and documentation (ICCD), and a series tied to the Vera Maone prize. Alongside the books it makes what it calls “no books”, posters and graphic objects for readers interested in design, and the list reaches into architecture, cinema and critical theory without leaving photography behind.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
