On 30 December 2019, between half past eleven and half past three, on the island of Ventotene, Aniello Barone photographed a geological wall, reading in it the history of the earth and its layers of different ages; on that wall he made out a shadow, a silhouette, imagining he saw a human profile in continual becoming that questioned him. Bringing the human shadow into the light, it becomes nature, and it could not be otherwise.

“The gaze rests for a brief fraction of time on a pre-human, or perhaps post-human, world.”

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
