Barone began working in 1995, after graduating with a thesis on environmental decay and urban solid waste. From that year he undertook a research on the urban and suburban realities of Naples, in the course of which he went deeper into immigration and into the outskirts of that province.

He pays particular attention to people arriving from Africa, Asia, South America and eastern Europe.
