Scheidegger & Spiess

Zurich, Switzerland · since 1997

Scheidegger & Spiess was founded in Zurich, according to the Historical Dictionary of Switzerland in 1997, by the photographer Ernst Scheidegger and Heiner Spiess, and the founder's trade is in its habits: Scheidegger, counted among the most distinguished Swiss photographers of the twentieth century, also designed art books and ran a gallery. The house describes itself as one of Switzerland's leading publishers for art, photography and architecture, and its list covers illustrated books on art, architecture, photography, design and cultural history, including a series of letters and diaries called Spotlight. About half of its titles come in English, and the company is independently owned and run.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
