Museum of Modern Art

New York, United States · since 1929

MoMA's publishing programme has been central to the museum's mission since it was founded in 1929, a way to show the scholarship of its staff and associates, and its exhibition catalogues are a major part of the museum's record. In photography the lineage is long: the museum calls William Eggleston's Guide, first issued in 1976, its first book of colour photography, and it has published a multi-volume survey, Photography at MoMA, covering 1840 to 1920, 1920 to 1960 and 1960 to the present. The books in this archive are the photography catalogues of recent years, monographs and collection surveys that follow the museum's exhibitions.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
