Museum under Construction series, no. 17
Developed in partnership with the Kulik-KwieKulik Foundation
Number 17 in the Museum under Construction series, this is the first publication devoted solely to the work of Zofia Kulik. Between 1970 and 1987 Kulik worked alongside Przemysław Kwiek as the duo KwieKulik, after which she developed a successful individual career. While the work of KwieKulik is well established as central to the East European neo-avant-garde of the 1970s and 1980s, Kulik's solo work had yet to be examined in depth. The monograph analyzes the themes of her rich and complex oeuvre, addressing the (post)communist condition, artistic labor, intermediality, and the conditions of working as a female artist. The title comes from a 1999 interview in which Hans Ulrich Obrist visited Kulik at her home in Łomianki near Warsaw: after explaining the different aspects of her complicated working methods, she said she would very much like to make an exhibition entitled Methodology, My Love. Such a show has not yet been organized, but the book goes beyond the attractive visuality of her works to what lies behind them: the enormous image archive, the collections of various things, the storage items, and the long-elaborated practices of transforming the assembly of single images into complex visual structures.
