Roma Publication

Amsterdam, Netherlands · since 1998

Roma Publications is an Amsterdam art-book publisher and design studio, founded in 1998 by the graphic designer Roger Willems and the artists Mark Manders and Marc Nagtzaam. It makes “autonomous publications” in close collaboration with artists, institutions, writers and designers, and each one follows its own approach to appearance and distribution, “varying from house to house papers to exclusive books”, with print runs from 2 to 150,000 copies. Willems is credited as designer on many of the titles, so publishing and design are one practice, and the studio curates exhibitions now and then. Titles carry a running ROMA number, so the list reads as one long numbered series in which photography is one form among others that an artist's book can take.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
