Actes Sud

Arles, France · since 1978

Actes Sud was set up in 1978 by Hubert Nyssen and Christine Le Bœuf, and it grew out of ACTES, the Atelier de Cartographie Thématique et Statistique; its first home was a sheepfold in Le Paradou, far from Paris and Saint-Germain-des-Prés, and in 1983 it moved to the Le Méjan site in central Arles. Joined early on by Françoise Nyssen, Bertrand Py and Jean-Paul Capitani, it became a sizeable house, known above all for foreign literature in dozens of languages, with series for theatre and other fields. Photography is a small part of a large general list.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
