Hatje Cantz

Berlin, Germany · since 1945

Hatje Cantz traces itself to Gerd Hatje, who founded the Humanitas Verlag in Stuttgart in 1945, renamed it Verlag Gerd Hatje in 1947 and sold it in 1990 to the Dr. Cantz'sche Druckerei, a printing house, which is why the name Hatje Cantz, in use since 1999, joins a publisher and a printer. The house became part of the Ganske Publishing Group in Hamburg in 2011 and is now based in Berlin. It publishes illustrated books on art, architecture, photography and design, including pocket-sized A–Z art books and Edition Hatje Cantz, a line of signed, limited prints and objects.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
