Kehrer

Heidelberg, Germany · since 1995

Kehrer Verlag has specialised in art and photography books since 1995, and it remains an owner-run house: Klaus Kehrer owns and directs it, and it counts itself among the few independent publishers of its size in Germany. The Heidelberg list reaches beyond photography into contemporary art, art from the 17th to the 20th century and international sound art, which is unusual for a house known for photobooks. Production is kept in-house by Kehrer Design under the same roof. From 2011 to 2016 it was the German partner of the European Publishers Award for Photography, and its Berlin gallery, opened in 2014, has operated since May 2019 as “analog”, a showroom for photobooks.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
