This publication and exhibition focus on the diverse possibilities for staging physicality, whereby the body is understood as a medium for conveying different roles, projections, desires, and fantasies. The approximately two hundred fifty objects presented from the F.C. Gundlach collection— dating from 1900 to the present and assembled by him since the mid-1970s—are not only highly topical in terms of the new constellation of the queer community, they also open up a view of an exciting yet intimate area of this private collection: the vulnerable and the defensive, the tamed and the untamed, the patient and the restless body, illuminated from a wide variety of perspectives and motivations by the approximately sixty participating photographers. Artists: Diane Arbus, Hans Bellmer, Erwin Blumenfeld, Katharina Bosse, Bill Brandt, Larry Clark, Jiří Georg Dokoupil, Greg Gorman, Fergus Greer, Jenny Holzer, Jürgen Klauke, Les Krims, Robert Mapplethorpe, Kembra Pfahler, Jimmy DeSana, Cindy Sherman, Joel Peter Witkin et al.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
