Sokyusha

Tokyo, Japan · since 1986

Sokyusha works from a small desk by Shinjuku Gyoen in Tokyo, and it is a one-editor operation. Since 1986, when it published Masahisa Fukase's Karasu (Ravens), the photo editor Michitaka Ota has made more than ten new photobooks a year, and he is the editor of every one of them. The house has three parts: publishing, a gallery on the premises that opened in 2008, and a shop for new and second-hand photobooks. The books follow a steady pattern, with editions of a few hundred copies, mostly hardcover, and for each one the site records the printing, the number of images and the edition size. Everything on the list passes through one editor's hands.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
