A second edition that brings back one of the most sought-after photobooks of the late Yoshiichi Hara (1948-2019). Originally published in 2013, Tokoyo no Mushi (Everlasting Insect) weaves a strange, dark atmosphere as Hara captures an urban world through the perspective of insects. Fascinated by the story of a god-like everlasting insect he stumbled upon in a translation of the Nihon Shoki, one of the oldest Japanese books, he became so absorbed in the nature and instincts of insects that he tried to adopt them in his photography. In the afterword he writes that small insects die when the summer goes, or sooner, and that these small lives teach him more about the meaning of his lifetime than he could understand himself. The second edition revises the texts and adds a chronology of Hara's major publications and exhibitions. All text is in Japanese and English.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
