In her photobook debut Kozue Ishimoto presents photographs taken in the streets of Delhi and Varanasi in India. Fascinated by day-to-day life on the streets, from chaotic traffic to street vendors cooking food and religious ceremonies on the banks of the river Ganges, Ishimoto matches candid wide-angle scenes with staged portraits. Although they are in black and white, the photographs have an almost three-dimensional quality: the interplay of artificial light and shadows on the streets at night, or the intense detail of the portraits, lends each image a vivid, life-like sensibility.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
