Born in Chengdu, China, educated in Japan, working in the United States and later travelling around the world, Hasu August describes a life as a plant without roots, floating down the river of life. Of the countless places visited and lived in, three stand out: Chengdu, Singapore, where August was naturalized, and Kyoto. Though they belong to different countries, cultures and histories, the three cities share commonalities that resonate deeply. The street photographs explore this attachment, recording daily life in an unceremonious, matter-of-fact manner: women shopping, children riding bicycles, a group of people waiting at a stoplight, a woman in a café, someone standing at the far end of a backyard. In the afterword August describes wandering the three cities with a free heart, watching the similarities of humanity and the differences carved into people by their cultures, and sensing a subtle connection with their daily living.
