Sachiko Shimizu tells the story of Shimokita, a peninsula in Aomori at the northernmost tip of Japan's main island of Honshu, through pictures that are bright, blue and green. The forests and hills, together with the deep blue of the Tsugaru Strait that surrounds the peninsula, make the first impression; page by page, daily life emerges, with its deep traditions and history and the urgent problems the region faces, from nuclear power plants and other abuses of nature to a slowly declining, ageing population. Rather than a straightforward documentary approach, Shimizu concentrates on moods, feelings and memories, evoked through mostly unpeopled images of scenery and details.
