Le Mulet

Brussels, Belgium · since 2018

Le Mulet is a small non-profit press in Brussels, set up in 2018 by two photographers who publish themselves among others, Mathieu Van Assche and Simon Vansteenwinckel. Its stated purpose reaches past books: magazines, prints, engravings, screenings and workshops all count as ways of putting visual work in front of people, Belgian or foreign. That workshop spirit shows in how the catalogue is made. Zines run off on a digital press sit beside offset hardcovers with hot stamping, almost all designed by the same Brussels studio, and the strongest projects are collective: photographers handed one chosen place, or one city for a few days, then left to see it each in their own way. Read the books as the output of a scene rather than a list.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
