Naturally drawn to the city and its suburbs, David Siodos turns his eye to the human, and in particular to the invisible people of the streets whose distress consumes him; his work sets out to render the world of shadows through the prism of the marvellous. The series follows individuals who wander, work or live on the periphery of life, to the point where the photographer no longer knows whether he is alive or merely a shadow. “My life is a dream that never ends,” says Pierre, a homeless man in Toulouse whose grace seemed to light up the dark street, while the living jostle in an absurd ballet, prisoners of their schedules. Christian Caujolle describes a floating, unbalanced, agitated world, black and pierced with white stridencies, haunted by blurred, sometimes ghostly figures and escaping animals, where photographic grain becomes the most obvious materiality: the point is not to describe but to share feelings and sensations.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
