Phaidon

United Kingdom · since 1923

Phaidon was founded in Vienna by Béla Horovitz, Fritz Ungar and Ludwig Goldscheider with a simple, then new idea: to make elegantly produced art books at prices that more people could pay, and the house says that a hundred years ago it invented the art book. It describes itself today as the leading global publisher of the creative arts, with books on art, photography, design, architecture, fashion, food and travel, plus illustrated children's books, under the belief that books should enlighten, delight and inspire. Artspace joined the group in 2014 and the American house Monacelli in 2020. Photography is one of its many subjects, and its photography list sits next to the monographs and surveys of the other arts.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
