Distanz

Berlin, Germany · since 2010

DISTANZ is a Berlin art-book publisher, established in 2010, whose list is built largely on commissions from museums and institutions: the exhibition catalogue or the monograph on a selected position, with every phase of production followed by a standing network of authors, editors and translators. Photography is one programme alongside contemporary art, art theory, architecture and design, and it follows the same logic: books by artists who work across media, or collective catalogues that treat photography as an idea rather than a genre. Two series give the house its character: KONTEXT, which pairs artists with writers, and FUNDUS, a library of writing on art, culture and philosophy whose roots go back to East Germany in 1959. Signed prints and etchings are often released together with a book.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
