Zen Foto Gallery
ZEN Foto Gallery opened in 2009 in Roppongi, Tokyo, and describes itself as a photography gallery and publisher focused on Asian photography. Its books come out of the gallery's programme, so established Japanese names share the list with emerging photographers, and about two books in three are softcovers. The publishing side is paired with shashasha, founded in 2013 as its publishing and distribution arm. Its premise, stated on the site, is that photobook distribution is very limited and independent publishers struggle to enter national and global systems, so the aim is to make photobooks available to readers everywhere; since 2016 it also carries titles from selected publishers worldwide. That makes ZEN less a single editorial line than an outlet for Japanese and Asian photobooks.
