Steidl

Göttingen, Germany · since 1969

Steidl began as a printer, not a publisher. In 1969 Gerhard Steidl set up a screen-printing workshop in a Göttingen garage, and among its first customers were Joseph Beuys, Marcel Broodthaers and Nam June Paik. The first book followed in 1972, and political non-fiction led to literature, art and, from 1994, a photobook programme. That origin explains the house style: Steidl himself chooses paper and binding for every title and oversees production at Düstere Straße, and the house stands by offset lithography as a democratic medium (“we believe in print”). The archive bears it out: more than eight in ten of its books are hardcovers, and about half are in monochrome. Read a Steidl book first as an object, then as a body of images.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
