In the winter of 1988 the Zeit-Magazin ran a three-part report on the vehement workers’ protests against the closure of the Krupp steelworks in Rheinhausen. Through the example of the Ebert family, who had worked for four generations at the legendary ironworks near Duisburg, the journalist Wolfram Runkel and the photographer Dirk Reinartz documented in words and images the history and decline of the Rheinhausen site. The shift unfolded gradually—from unconditional solidarity with the company, which offered its employees not only jobs but a whole system of everyday and leisure facilities, to bitter disappointment and revolt. Rheinhausen became the symbol of the “steel crisis” and of the end of a more than hundred-year-old industry.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
