The photographs of Pulitzer Prize winner Anja Niedringhaus have made their way around the world: images of the siege of Sarajevo and the flight from Kosovo, of seagulls circling above the ruins of the World Trade Center, of American soldiers fighting for the Iraqi city of Fallujah, of children playing in Kabul, and of Western troops patrolling Kunduz. Niedringhaus’ images tell the stories of international crises and conflicts and have become part of our collective memory. Yet the œuvre of the photographer, who was shot dead in 2014 while on assignment in Afghanistan, consists of much more than her iconic images. This is the first comprehensive insight into her work from different phases and contexts: her early black-and-white photographs, her beginnings for local newspapers, her color images from the wars in the disintegrating Yugoslavia, her view into politics and society, and the world of sports. The diversity of her work as a traveling reporter for the Associated Press is evident from her assignments: Iraq, Pakistan, Libya, Gaza, Israel, the West Bank and repeatedly Afghanistan.
