The Place du Jeu de Balle in Brussels is known for two things: its uneven cobblestones and its flea market. Number 35 is a café where a clientele of uprooted people from all over the planet meets amid an eclectic decor of objects taken from their original homes by the owners, who are also house-clearers. Men and objects in exodus find refuge here from the harshness of the world. At the helm are brothers of Assyrian origin: Daniel, the joker, shakes the fleas in Arabic with a friend, while Patrick, the wise one, murmurs in Aramaic into the ear of a bargain hunter the value of a small object wrapped in newspaper. No racket, no pinball, little alcohol, few women: people sip tea or coffee in low voices. Le Pavé is a world of peace, respect, solidarity and affection.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
