Who is the new angel of the title? Reading Taichi Tomiyama's photobook is like trying to remember something for the first time in a long time. The black-and-white photographs are blurry, faded and cropped, never revealing enough detail to pinpoint a location or a person: when did this take place, who are these people, do they know the photographer, where are we? They hint at just enough to feed the imagination and to add the fragments together into something that is not quite whole, but close enough. In the afterword Tomiyama writes that events sometimes unfold in ways never imagined and come full circle, putting him back where he started, in a place full of countless images and fragments of time; standing there he is astonished by the spectacle of memories rising to the surface, and everything begins again. The Japanese subtitle places the pictures in Cuba, 2007.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
