Yukinori Tokoro engages the relativity of time on a bullet train. Shooting from a Shinkansen window with a slow shutter speed, he makes streaky, magical-seeming images that divide the passage of time along the parallax of the objects flashing by: far objects remain still and clear, nearer objects blur until they are unrecognisable. In the afterword he says that shooting from the train reminded him of Einstein's special theory of relativity, and his aim is a photograph that conveys the flow of time within a single frame, a kind of moving image in one picture. There is a strange beauty in this abstract visual metaphor, one that cannot be replicated in any other medium but photography.
