Without the dates stated in the caption of each photograph it would be hard to tell in which decade Keizo Motoda shot these images; they date from the 2010s. In his street portraits Motoda follows his fascination with sub- and fringe cultures in Japanese society, from rockabillies, street performers, cross-dressers and lowrider enthusiasts to travelling Buddhist monks, turning his lens to those who make the streets interesting. Basic street snapshot practice, the photographer's senses react immediately to the people and scenes he meets, he faces his subject and presses the shutter, and a slightly twisted sense works as the spice. In the afterword Motoda writes that the sorrow and joy of the people he passes and the flourishing and decline of the streets reach into him like the voice of living flesh.
