Michio Yamauchi's first photographs made with artistic intent, taken around Tokyo from 1981. While walking through the city trying to photograph this and that, the photographer's attention turned naturally to children, and the impromptu pictures of them had something special about them. Some of the children pose for the camera, others seem unaware of it. Fond of the innocence of children, Yamauchi had expected a cuter book, but everyday children turned out to wear very grown-up expressions: despite their young age they convey a solemn seriousness, and instead of being innocent and sweet their characters mark them as old souls, mature and reflective.
