Following Vagrant Birds and Resident Birds, The Boat in the Grass is Shoichi Ito's third photobook in a series about shores and bodies of water in the San'in region, in the southwestern part of Honshu, Japan's main island. As Ito notes in the afterword, he is not a local: having moved to the region later in life, he retains the ability to notice and frame its natural landscape with the eyes and interest of an outsider. Through different colour palettes, seasons and compositional approaches, each photograph reveals the variety and depth that can emerge from sustained attention to a landscape. Thirteen years after deciding to make San'in his final home, Ito wonders whether he has really put down roots or has simply drifted and been washed ashore, and continues to photograph the places he has visited and captured many times.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
