Annu Aalto collects photographs taken during countless trips to Helsinki over nine years. Rather than a travel journal, the images form a comprehensive, if subjective, portrait of the Finnish capital from the perspective of an intimately acquainted outsider, neither resident nor passer-by, in a space between the everyday and the journey that stretches out in a kind of poetic indeterminacy. In the afterword she writes that some things can only be seen over time, that a day will come when she can no longer return to the city, and that until then she will go back time after time to be an observer of this city of suspended existence. The book includes an essay on her work by a Japanese art critic.
