Ichiro Kikuchi shares the unusual yet not entirely out-of-place views and landscapes of Japan's rural areas in a photobook published after a hiatus of eight years. Finding his locations forty per cent by research and sixty per cent by random chance, Kikuchi's persistence and curiosity lead him to scenes of understated remarkability, never quite too strange yet still peculiar and striking, an effect often aided by his framing and use of colour. In his afterword Susumu Terada notes that the spaces shown may seem strange to today's viewer but are common and familiar to the inhabitants, with no distinctive meaning; they take on meaning only in the context of an unfamiliar gaze drawn in from outside. The work began in 2008 as a journey around the traces of human presence, gathering fragments of discomfort from across the country.
