Hiromi Kobayashi's exploration of flowers, trees and natural landscapes goes beyond a simple appreciation of nature's aesthetic ingenuity. After making a bell pepper appear out of thin air over the course of three images, Kobayashi examines the simple shapes of several cut flowers in isolation in a studio setting, then gradually adds complexity, moving from flower photography to almost abstract scenes of a winter forest and birds on a lake. In the afterword the beautiful, shining sunlight recalls a sense of salvation and happiness, and the days of becoming one with the camera and searching for moments of illumination.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
