Tokyo's train stations each have a unique character that goes beyond their look: the individual architecture, the layout of the tracks, the materials, the rhythm of arriving and departing trains all come together to form a station's personality. For this photobook Retsu Shinoda examined the stations like an archaeologist, unearthing the physicality, the details, the stains and the patina of each, but also the memories and sensations that, invisible to the eye, have become part of these places' ether. The atmospheric, careful shots invite the viewer to examine the concreteness of common everyday places, our relationship with them and the lasting traces we inscribe on them.
