Time has stopped in the scenes Katsuhiko Hashimoto captured in towns and cities throughout Japan: street views presented as accumulations of time that show what once was. In the afterword he explains that his photographs are driven by mental pictures of his memories and their misalignment with the present world. Streets that stand quietly, unmoved by the swell of the years, allow one to slip back to a gentler course of time; serenity and the conversations of people soothe the hectic flurry of life, and there are still such places today, slow towns whose old Showa-era buildings and shop-lined streets recall bygone days.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
