Haidacho is a small fishing village of about 130 people in Mie Prefecture that needs young people in order to survive. Luckily the village owns a special large fishing net, which attracts young people who want to work in fishing, and it upholds its old customs while welcoming newcomers from outside. Keiichi Kubo spent more than six years photographing the village, its people, the fishers and their work. In the afterword he writes that a good tide yields a good catch, that it is pointless to be angry at nature when the catch is poor, and that after a spell of poor hauls a good tide comes along and the entire fishing village is enveloped in smiles.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
