Hiroshi Takai focuses on his home village of Ichijima in Tamba, Hyogo Prefecture, where he has lived and worked as a farmer since 2006 and has an intricate bond with the region, its nature and its dangers. In August 2014 exceptionally heavy rainfall caused a landslide that devastated buildings and swept away fields. The black-and-white photographs document the lasting impact of the disaster, but also capture the beauty of the landscape, the combination of different trees and flowers and the patterns formed in fields when the wind blows over them, and details of Ichijima's decelerated agricultural way of life. The title is a coinage: yato is a valley-like terrain formed by the erosion of hills and suited to farming, and januke, written snake-slip in kanji, means a mudslide. In praise of humanity, Takai photographed the community's journey from disaster recovery to reconstruction, sensing in the devastated landscapes the vitality to return to their original state.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
