In April 1987 Michitaka Ota of Sokyusha met Daido Moriyama for the first time to make a photobook, and on that day Moriyama put down a cardboard box with about a thousand prints and told him to do as he liked. Some of the photographs were published in A Journey to Nakaji (1987) and in Dreams of Water (1999); the others stayed with Ota, in a storage box, for a long time. In 2022, learning that few of Moriyama's 1980s prints remain in Japan, Ota decided to place the prints in the collection of the Shimane Art Museum, and seeing them again after twenty years convinced him that he could now give them shape. The thirty-odd years between making and publishing become part of their charm: snapshots of streets, textures and the beauty of urban chaos and, somewhat atypically, plants and floral wildlife.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
