Issue 59 of Daido Moriyama's own ongoing journal, in its nineteenth year since the relaunch.

“It was at a café on top of a building in the middle of Shinjuku that has long gone, where I received a strong request from Mr Akio Nagasawa, the current publisher, to relaunch that handmade and privately pressed zine that had failed and folded after the fifth issue some thirty years earlier. 'Come on, keep putting that out! I will make it, let's start right away!' Those words, in that moment, revived my memories of a magazine that I had all but forgotten about. He said: 'All you do is send me the pictures you are taking these days, whenever you feel like it. Then we'll just put them all in, and I won't meddle with it.' For the next nineteen years, most of the snapshots taken during the second half of my working life have been collected here. Even the pictures brought home from travels abroad ended up in one issue or another. All of the myriad scenes of everyday life that I have captured in the later years of my life have been converted into pages, which means that everything in it is a memory, a souvenir, a record in itself.” — from the afterword

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
