Takashi Hara's photographs, taken with a medium-format Holga on black-and-white film, do not unlock themselves on a quick browse. Dark and slow, they seem unconnected at first glance, but something hints at a deeper space hiding behind the surface: the longer one looks at the deep blacks and dazzling whites, the more their richness appears. As the pages add up and the impressions overlap, Hara builds a strange new world of his own, of unease and allure, one that evades being fully captured in words and can only be glanced at through photography. An essay by the writer Yoshitaka Takahashi reflects that photography exists somewhere beyond logic and that Hara's feelings are directly reflected in the pictures. The essay is in Japanese and English.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
