Straight snapshots taken on the streets of Tokyo between 1990 and 1996. Having learned under Daido Moriyama and others in the 1980s, Hiroyoshi Yamazaki spent the 1990s photographing the city while caring for his bedridden father at home, and used the time he had outside to capture street life in images that each tell little tales and, put together, form a larger story of life and fashion in the years right after the bursting of Japan's bubble economy. The panoramic format extends the scenes both vertically and horizontally, and Yamazaki's framing has a lightness and a strange, intriguing distance from the people and places he shows. Looking back at scenes from nearly thirty years earlier, he reflects that the essence of photography seems to lie less in the active act of shooting than in the things that happen to be reflected in the picture.
