Colour photographs taken in Tokyo between 1987 and 1990; the title is perhaps a reference to Bruce Gilden's definition of street photography, that if you can smell the street by looking at the photo then it is a street photograph. In the afterword Hiroyoshi Yamazaki reveals that this was a turbulent and difficult time: rising success as a member of Daido Moriyama's FotoSession group, important exhibitions and magazine series, but also tragedy within the family. The pictures capture Tokyo in one of its most iconic periods, the late bubble years of the 1980s, when people were either making money or missing out on making money and much of life took place in public, on the streets. After more than forty years they have an almost historical value, but they fascinate for their ability to convey an atmosphere or a vibe and not only the scenes captured by the camera; Yamazaki kept them real and realistic, focusing on the constant minute negotiations of social life in the city.
